First examination and the 3D scan
Everything starts with an examination and a CBCT 3D scan of the jaw. The scan shows bone height and width and the position of nerves and sinuses, so we plan the exact position, angle and size of the implant before anything begins. You receive the treatment plan together with a quote, and you decide in your own time.
The placement itself
The implant is placed under local anesthesia and the procedure does not hurt. A single implant usually takes less than an hour. We work with guided surgery based on the 3D plan, which keeps the procedure precise and gentle to surrounding tissue. Mild swelling or tenderness in the following days is normal and passes.
Osseointegration: the healing period
After placement the bone gradually bonds to the implant surface. This is called osseointegration and usually takes a few months, depending on bone quality and the position in the jaw. During this period the implant rests under the gum or carries a temporary restoration while you go about your life normally.
The final crown
Once the implant is firmly integrated we take a digital impression with an intraoral scanner and the crown is made to match the shade and shape of the neighbouring teeth. Depending on how many teeth are missing, the implant can also support a bridge or a denture.
When placement has to wait
If the bone is too thin, bone grafting is done first, and in the back of the upper jaw sometimes a sinus lift. This extends the treatment but gives the implant a stable foundation for years. You can read more on our oral surgery page.
